The Maldivian Manta Ray Project is a non-profit research and conservation organisation based at the Four Seasons Resorts in the Maldives. Starting in 2005, the project undertakes research on all aspects of the Maldivian manta ray population, while also working with the resort guests and other visitors to the Maldives to create greater awareness and understanding of these graceful rays.

One of they key aspects of our work is to continuously expand our photo identification database of individual manta rays encountered in the Maldives. Each manta has a unique spot pattern on its underside, enabling us to track individual's movements, plot migration routes and calculate population sizes.

You can help by sending us any photographs or video you have taken of Maldivian manta rays while on your holiday, specifically the underside markings of each individual encountered. All images will be compared to our existing database to determine whether it is a re-sighting or a brand new identification.

You can email us your images in JPEG format or mail them to us on a CD or DVD. It is also essential that you include along with the images the location where the manta where sighted, with the time of day and date. Manta behaviour, strength of the current, visibility and any other interesting observations are also greatly received.

Your help is greatly appreciated and really contributes to our research and the global knowledge of manta rays.
